Why You Need Your Own Website

Why You Need Your Own WebsiteThere are several systems out there that you can join that offer “plug-n-play” websites and blogs.  Also, if you are involved with an MLM you get a company replicated site.  While they both have their place and have some usefulness, using them as your primary business website is not a great idea.

Since they are quick and easy to get started with and you don’t have to do the set-up, you may ask why you need your own website.  By using those platforms, you are really using someone else’s website to build a business.  You are not creating YOUR own business — you are helping grow THEIR business.  That is not the way to long term business growth.  They own and control all everything you produce and publish on their system.  That does not build any assets for you.

Your site also looks similar or identical to everyone else who is using that system.  You don’t stand out at all.  Potential prospects have no reason to choose you over anyone else.

If the company that owns the platform does not like what you are doing, they can shut down your site!  I know a few people who have lost months of work because of that happening to them.  You don’t want that to happen to you!

The search engines like Google, do not like replicated or viral blogging sites — at all!  Your site SEO ranking will suffer and people searching for information will not be able to find you.

You don’t want to put all the work into creating blog posts and have them passed over because of the platform you are using.  Also, if you are part of one of those platforms and comment on another blog that is not part of the network, your comment often gets sent to the spam folder.  They may never see it and it won’t get posted to the blog!

Why You Need Your Own Website

If you really want to build a successful online business website, you need to do it the right way — the safe way.  You build it all yourself so you own and control it.

You want to attract people to you to grow your own business.  You offer a reason to your readers as to why they should buy from you instead of some one else.  You need to Brand YOU rather than your MLM or viral blogging platform.

As you create content and generate leads, you get to add those leads to your list rather than the company’s list!  Why work hard to attract leads and basically give them away!  If, for some reason, you leave your MLM or change what you want to do, your  list stays with you and not the company or blogging platform!  That is a big deal! You worked hard to attract those people.  You want to keep them!

If you are in an MLM and have a company provided website, there is no reason you can’t send them there AFTER you have built a relationship with them on your own website.  You want them to like you and want to work with YOU before you send them there.

Now before you think building your own site sounds really hard – it isn’t!  I have a gift for you that will help you get started on the right track!  Just enter your name and email in the form on the right side of this page and I will send you my “8 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Redo Your Website (or Create One For The First Time)”.  Then you will understand why you need your own website.

  1. Hi Carol

I couldn’t agree more. It is very important to build up your own business because as you say you could change MLM’s and then you may lose all your contacts. It also feels more like it is your business when you are building the list yourself rather than just providing your MLM with more leads.

    • Rachel, you made me smile! Thanks for your comment and feel free to check my ‘Starter Kit’ out! 🙂

  2. Carol, I must admit that you made me curious to find out what your “Starter kit” is. I totally agree that it is so important to have your own website and capture your own leads. We wouldn’t want to lose our own database.

  3. Hi Carol,

I could not agree more with you. Anyone who wants to have a serious online business need to own their own website.

There are too many examples of lost websites at the whim of the host when hosted websites are used. A few years back that was a major issue with Blogger. Many people lost their sites and their incomes too.

Recently, it was the case with Posterous who is just about closing its doors.

When you own your domain name and have your site hosted on a reliable web host you are master of your own destiny.

  4. You hit the nail “Smack” on the head, Carol.

This is such an important point, and most beginning networkers just simply don’t get it. You gave a very good synopsis, and a well written post as to why you need your own website. It reminds me of a video I made a while back called “Why should i own my own wordpress blog.” You can watch it here. http://youtu.be/NXnKx0hATjY

Very good article! And I plan to share it.

  5. I could not agree more with the idea of having your own website. Promoting replicated company website, is not promoting you but the company you represent.. Having your own website is building your presence online thus attracting relevance audience to build your list. Other platforms may come and go, but your website stays under your control. Thanks for sharing

  6. This is absolutely vital advice for anyone with an online business. While having a blog on another system may benefit you by giving your blog the backing of a site with a top PR (I won’t mention the network, but I’m sure most realise who I’m talking about), at the end of the day it is still on their network and you could lose everything overnight if something went drastically wrong.

Of course you always run the risk of losing your site, even if it’s completely yours, but the more control you have over your assets the better. Furthermore, if you build your own site from the ground up then you’re building a foundation, build for the long-term and, as you say, you’re branding YOU.

  7. I am in total agreement with you Carol. Often people want to get things started quickly and find these options are a good idea. I think they say to themselves that they will start this way and get a wordpress blog done later when they get things going. From experience it’s a lot better to get it done the right way the first time. Our blog and websites evolve as we and our business evolve as well.

    Great share!
