My Transition – Becoming An Entrepreneurial Mom – Part 2

In part 1 I shared that I have a goal of Becoming An Entrepreneurial Mom. I decided I needed to find something I could do from home to make money.  For me, finding something that I could feel good about doing and feel proud of was most important.  I want to be able to help others succeed.

Becoming An Entrepreneurial MomI also wanted to leverage the skills I had gained in my career.  I had the opportunity to do customer training, product marketing, world travel, software engineering, writing documentation, leading projects, and working with teams.  These seemed like they would definitely help in becoming an entrepreneurial mom.

Becoming An Entrepreneurial Mom

My first step was to join an MLM.  I learned about the business model and loved it.  It is based on helping others succeed.  I’m in!!  Then I discovered that I loved the products and that the other distributors I met were great!  I really enjoy hanging around with them and learning from them.  It really is a wonderful community to belong to.

So, basically, you sign up as a distributor for XYZ Company, use and love the products, and tell others about it.  The idea is that they will love what you share with them and want to do the same.  They join, buy products, share – and you make money.  Pretty simple, right?

Well, not so fast.  Let’s say I share with Jane and she joins since she is interested in becoming an entrepreneurial mom too.  It is then my responsibility to help her learn the ropes so she will be able to sign others up – or at least find customers to use the products.   My responsibility becomes supporting.  I want to help Jane succeed.  That’s where the “helping others to succeed” comes in.  I like that part of it. The model is simple, but requires effort on my part.  But, I don’t mind the effort.

The problem is the traditional method for growing your MLM business is to make a list of everyone you have ever had any kind of contact with – ever – because after all, “everyone is your prospect.”  Then find a way to talk to them about your business and invite them to a meeting or call, or webinar, etc. and eventually, to join you in the business.  Didn’t like that part at all!  I felt like I was pursuing and bugging people.

I know the MLM concept and business model is a fantastic one, and I really want to help people improve their lives.  I just didn’t want to be the one to tell them that is what they wanted.  I wanted to find a way to help people without pestering them.  I wanted to help them learn and then discover for themselves if that is what they wanted.  Zig Ziglar sums it up pretty well.

“If you can dream it, then you can achieve it. You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.”  ~Zig Ziglar
