Have you ever felt overwhelmed with all that you have to do to run a business? Seems like there is always something else that needs to be done. Sometimes we start thinking that we need to get EVERYTHING done now! But all that does is get us in a state of overwhelm and we don’t get anything done.
When you get in that state, just stop for a minute. You need to get clear on what you are trying to do.
Get Clear On Your Target
Sit down and write out exactly what it is you want to accomplish. Get crystal clear. If you don’t know exactly where you are going, you will just wander around not getting anywhere. Not having clarity about your goals will just lead to overwhelm because you don’t have a clear target!
Set Goals to Build Your Belief
Once you know what you want to accomplish, its time to set some goals. I know, sometimes hearing that word can be a bit exasperating. But it is worth it.
Here’s why. You start out with some belief in yourself and what you are trying to do. You take some action, get some sort of outcome. That outcome, whether good or bad, will strengthen or weaken your belief. When your actions lead to an outcome that strengthens your belief, you are willing to take greater actions. You then get greater outcomes, and so forth.
Here’s a way to set goals to build your belief in what you are doing. First off, you need to stop the “all or nothing” thinking. You don’t have to set really big goals. Let’s start small. You can always do more!
The idea here is to set goals to start small but also leave room for doing more, if you decide to. Set goals with 3 levels – a minimum, a target, and an outrageous level.
The minimum level is the MUST DO level. For example, “I will talk to 1 person every day about my business.”
The target level is the optimum level. “I will talk to 3 people every day about my business.”
The outrageous level is the over-and-above level. “I will talk to 30 people this week about my business.”
You may wonder why we don’t just start with the outrageous or even the target level. The idea here is to set goals to build your belief that you can and will accomplish. Getting something done that you feel good about moves you closer to your target and does a lot for your self-confidence.
Breaking what feels like a huge task into small goals that you know you CAN accomplish will help manage the overwhelm and keep you moving towards your ultimate goal!
Your task is to look at where you are trying to get to and set goals to build your belief that you can get there!
